Juanita (Smith) MacVenn (White Feather)
Native
heritage of Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Shawnee.
Born
on June 25, 1949, in Omaha, Illinois a very small town in South Eastern
Illinois. She moved to Rockford, Illinois when she was about 2 years old.
Attended school in Rockford. Acquired a GED at the age of 32 while pregnant with
her 4th child. She has 3 sons and 1 daughter. One year after
getting her GED she became a personal care attendent and worked for 2 years for
the same woman and then she started school again. At the age of 37 she
graduated from Nursing School as a Licenced Practical Nurse. Juanita has
been working with the Elderly for about 21 years all together.
Juanita
was raised by her mother and grandparents until her mother remarried when she
was 6 years of age. Her Grandfather and Mother were proud of their Cherokee
and Blackfoot haitage. But no-one gave her much background about who was
who on her Grandfathers side.
She
was not raised by her Father, but was tracked down in 2000-1 by her half sister
Connie, who informed her that not only was their Dad part Cherokee but was also
part Shawnee. Her sister did not find this out until after their Father passed
away.
When
Juanita and her Husband had their Traditional Pipe Ceremony Wedding in 2003, she
was gifted her first native name by the Lakota elder who performed the Pipe
Ceremony.
White
Feather enjoys beading, working with leather, story telling, and learning more
about her heritage. She made her own Buckskin dress for her wedding and beaded
her husband a Wedding belt. She has made fur hats and drum sticks.
