KING KUKA

Native American Artist
of the
Blackfeet Tribe

I will send my heart with the eagle
carried on winds of trust
to be blessed by the Sun
and baptized in rain
beneath natures rainbow alter.

King Kuka
December 1991

"Paintings are made with tool,
and our experiences,

but art is made with our heart”
Oct. 15. 1993

King Kuka was born and raised on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. His many life experiences now add vibrant colors to his art. Creating art is not a simple pastime, but the spiritual essence of his life.

In those early years life was hard not knowing whether rent would get paid, or even if food would be set for the table. However, a strong creative mind rises up to meet such challenges and so it is with King. In the time before settlers vision quests were made by his people, Kuka’s quest was made and he has found and continues to find his creative spirit.

Kuka has received awards in every category of art and several in literature. As a result, his art has been widely purchased in the United States and around the world. To name just a few, his writings have appeared in:

The Whispering Wind (Doubleday),
Voices of the Rainbow (Viking), and
Dancing on the Rim of the World
(University of Arizona Press)

Likewise his art is housed in the permanent collections of:

Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, Tulsa, OK
National Museum of Man, Ottawa, Canada
Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, New York City, NY
Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ
Deutches Museum, Munich, Germany
Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland, OH
American Indian Arts Institute, Santa Fe, NM
Museum Of the Plains Indian, Browning, MT
and several thousand individual collections

King Kuka is highly recognized for his own individual style, his ability to work in watercolors, oils, bronze, steel, silver and gold, and dedication to his people, his art, his family and religion. His supportive wife, Marietta, works side by side with him, and his five children are active in the arts as well.

King has recently established a new enterprise called Prairie Productions. This company is the outlet from which his lithographic prints, Kukagraphs -- a printing process he developed and perfected ---, bronzes, and other art can be purchased.
